L3 Communications, Interstate Electronies Corporation Request for Extension of STA Earth Station E020160 L3 Communications Interstate Electronics Corporation (‘EC"),pending applicant for a new Ku—Band VSAT network, see FCC File No, SES—LIC—2002061 1— 00939, hereby seeks an extension of Special Temporary Authority ("STA") previously granted to IEC to operate the VSAT network while the above—referenced application remains pending. See FCC File No. SES—$TA—20061 114—02023, The facilitiesare being used by the United States Navy in connection with its Trident MissiFlight Test Program. The STA has allowed for continued improvements on this sea—based leg ofthe triad ofAmerican strategic deterrent forees, and is helping to se the basic communications parameters and long term availabilty statistios. As noted in the previously authorized grants, he public interest would be well served by this STA request. With the continued need for military vigilance, esting and operations ofe IEC VSAT network will help the United States Navy remain at the forefront oftechnological developments and provide the rapid response necessary in military application. Therefore, acting favorably on this request willallow for the use of telecommunications to provide for an improved national defense in an efficient and orderly manner.
