GE American Communications, Inc. (°GE Americom"), licensee of the Satcom K—2 communications satellite, respectfully requests special temporary authority to continue operations on its Satcom K—2 satellite. Grant of this request will allow continued service to customers and promote efficient use of orbital resources. Satcom K—2 was placed into service at the 81° W.L. orbital location on December 19, 1985, with a ten—year license term that expired December 19, 1995. On November 21, 1995, GE Americom requested special temporary authority to continue operations on Satcom K—2 for the six month period from December 19, 1995 to June 19, 1996. That request was placed on public notice on January 24, 1996, 1/ and was not opposed. Satcom K—2 continues to be capable of providing reliable and affordable services to customers, including customers involved in television network program distribution and backhaul services and VSAT networks. Grant of special temporary authority for the licensee to operate Satcom K—2 for an additional six months would serve the public interest because it would allow the licensee to continue serving existing customers. Further, such authority would enable the licensee to provide a seamless transition of customer traffic from Satcom K—2 to GE— 1, which should be available to support traffic in the latter part of this year. WHEREFORE, GE Americom respectfully requests that the Commission grant special temporary authority for the licensee to continue operating Satcom K—2 until December 19, 1996.
