Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
The VT UAS Test Site respectfully requests the Federal Communications Commission to grant an Experimental License for the operation of one Gryphon EXB Radar. The experiment is in support of the FAA UAS Test Site program to evaluate surveillance technology to detect non-participating airborne traffic to mitigate risk for UAS flight during integration in the National Airspace System (NAS).

Purpose of Operation
Please explain the purpose of operation:  The VT UAS Test Site is one of six Test Sites designated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a result of the 2012 FAA modernization and Reform Act and is part of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), a public land-grant university serving the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world community.
