Subject: Re: Environmental Assessment [Reference Number: 1553]

Dear Mr. Serafin,
This is in response to your request to assess the
environmental impact potential of the University of
Massachusetts 9.4 GHz mobile radar system
(confirmation
number: EL11180).
I must have unintentionally indicated in my response
to question 12 on FCC form 442, that my UMass X-band
radar system may have an environmental impact. The
radar system is a relatively low peak (10 kW max.) and
low
average (10 W max) power instrument used to image
tornadoes and other severe storm features. This
relatively low power is further diffused by a 1.8 m
diameter radome covered parabolic antenna, so that the
maximum average power density right in front of the
antenna aperture is below 1W/m^2. This power density
at the non-intrusive 9.4 GHz operating frequency
should be
harmless to humans, insects, birds or vegetation. To
make it further safe in normal operating mode the
antenna is rotated at a rate of 4 rpm and is
elevated about 12 feet above ground so that the radar
beam passes over individuals standing near the radar
system.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can provide
more information on this matter.

Sincerely yours,
Andrew L. Pazmany
