Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
Pursuant to Section 5.61 of the Commissions rules, 47 C.F.R. Sec. 5.61, Sony Electronics Inc., hereby requests special temporary authorization to operate a prototype wireless camera system for a period not to exceed six months beginning on November 13, 2000. As Sony Electronics has a demonstration of the device scheduled for November 13, 2000, it also requests expedited consideration of this application pursuant to Sec. 5.61(a) of the Commissions rules, 47 C.F.R. Sec. 5.61(a).
The purpose of the proposed demonstrations is to allow Sony Electronics to demonstrate and further refine a wireless camera system. The wireless camera system is consists of three items: a (a) compact MPEG encoder and a (b) RF transmitter which mounts to the back of a portable Electronic News Gathering (ENG) camera. The third part of the system is the (c) receiver which decodes the transmitted signal. Please see the attached diagram. Sony expects to modify certain parameters of the design before applying for equipment authorization, and an STA will allow Sony to show the product to perspective customers and receive feedback about features, which need to be added or modified.
The demonstrations will allow perspective customers to see the current picture quality of the product and the robustness of its transmission capability.
Sony Electronics intends to demonstrate the wireless camera to select customers and to show it at the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas, NV between April 15 and 27, 2000. Currently, Sony Electronics also has three earlier demonstrations scheduled. The dates and locations of those demonstrations are listed in Item 6 below. It is possible that Sony Electronics will want to conduct a few other demonstrations, and, if this application is granted, commits to let you know in advance of the time and place of those demonstrations.
