Ericsson Inc Experimental License Application 0249-EX-PL-2010 EXHIBIT 1 Describe the purpose of the application. Ericsson Inc. is a world leader in telecommunications. Ericsson has a long tradition of innovation that is founded in its strong commitment to the research and development of wireless technologies. As part of its core research and development activities, Ericsson periodically tests and demonstrates its technologies for collaborators, customers, regulators, and other government representatives. Ericsson frequently demonstrates its QuicLINK mobile radio communications system. The QuicLINK is a completely transportable WCDMA network in a compact package – it combines WCDMA functionality, the Radio Access Network, and the mobile Core Network into one lightweight, portable unit. A QuicLINK system supports circuit- switched voice/video UE-to-UE, UE-to-PSTN, and PSTN-to-UE calls, as well as packet- switched data calls, roaming, and backhaul to the PSTN or a PBX. The QuicLINK is specifically designed for deployability and its ideal for mobile units and field operations. Because of its portable nature, the QuicLINK is taken from location to location for demonstrations. In the past 3 years, Ericsson has filed for more than 30 separate STAs so that it could demonstrate the QuicLINK across the country. Ericsson requests a nationwide authorization to demonstrate its QuicLINK system to eliminate the administrative burden of filing and processing repeated requests with identical operating parameters. Ericsson has applied for a nationwide experiment because its demonstrations occur at various locations around the country. However, each specific demonstration is localized (generally less than a 1 Mile radius), generally only uses 5 MHz of spectrum, and occurs for a short period of time (generally 1-2 days). Should the FCC grant Ericsson’s request for a nationwide license, prior to demonstrations in a particular location, Ericsson will coordinate with existing and adjacent licensees as required.
