Special Temporary Authority application - Purpose of Operation
Please explain the purpose of operation:
Weather research Research to understand the effects of thunderstorms and lightning on the D and E regions of the ionosphere. No previous work on active ionospheric measurements with nearby thunderstorms is known to have been done. Scintillations and sporatic-E formation in the ionosphere can affect HF, satellite communications and GPS accuracy. Many of these ionospheric features and their origins are not understood well enough to provide accurate communication outage and degradation forecasts. We hope that the work done under this STA request will help with those issues.
