Special Temporary Authority application - Explanation

Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
Short term operation of ionosonde during summer thunderstorm season. Research is exploratory and will determine if longer-term operation and regular licensing is needed.

Special Temporary Authority application - Information

Class of Station:
FX
Nature of Service:
Experimental

Special Temporary Authority application - Initial values - Purpose of Operation

Please explain the purpose of operation:
Research to understand the effects of thunderstorms and lightning on the D and E regions of the ionosphere. No previous work on active ionospheric measurements with nearby thunderstorms is known to have been done. Scintillations and sporatic-E formation in the ionosphere can affect HF, satellite communications and GPS accuracy. Many of these ionospheric features and their origins are not understood well enough to provide accurate communication outage and degradation forecasts. We hope that the work done under this STA request will help with those issues.
