Response to Question 43 – Description of Application

Nextel Communications of the Mid-Atlantic, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sprint
Corporation (collectively, “Sprint”), has licensed a domestic VSAT network consisting of fixed
hub sites and transportable remote earth stations. These facilities are deployed to operate in
remote areas, where disasters have destroyed or impaired traditional forms of wireless
telecommunications, at major events/attractions, and at special events requiring enhanced
security. Sprint can operate these movable stations wherever additional or replacement
infrastructure is needed throughout the United States and its territories.

Sprint seeks Commission approval of the addition of new remotes and “fly away kits” to its
VSAT network. These additional remote stations will allow Sprint to expand its capabilities by
utilizing satellite backhaul to improve coverage where it is needed, primarily in rural areas
throughout the United States and its territories. Sprint respectfully submits that the grant of this
application will enable it to improve its coverage, capacity, and service.
