DIRECTV Enterprises, LLC Renewal of STA to Extend DBS8402 (DIRECTV 1) Attachment 1 Description of Request of Special Temporary Authority DIRECTV Enterprises, LLC (*DIRECTV®) hereby requests an extension of special temporary authority ("STA") to operate geostationary space station DBS8402 (DIRECTV 1) atthe 101° W.. orbital position at the currently licensed parameters and specifiations for an additional 30 days, through and including August 3, 2004. See FCC File No. SAT—STA—20040524—00105. DIRECTV has filed an application for STA to operate DIRECTV 1 for 180 beyond the June 4, 2004 expization date. See FCC File No. SAT—STA—20040524—00103. The Intermational Bureau granted DIRECTV an STA to operate DIRECTV 1 for 30 days beyond the Hicense expiration date,through and including July 4, 2004, during the public notice period required for the 180—day request. The 180—day request remains pending; therefore, DIRECTV requestsa renewal ofthe 30—day extension The DIRECTV 1 satelite was launched on December 17, 1993 as the United States‘ firs high—power direct broadeastsatllite. During the current licensed period, DIRECTV used this DBS satellite to distribute video programming toits customers, as well as backup capscity onceadditional DBS satellites were added to the DIRECTV fleet. DIRECTV 1 is eurrently positioned at the 101° W.L. orbital posiion. See File Nos. SAT—MOD—20030613—00120, SAT—MOD—20030613—00121. The expected remaining life of DIRECTV 1 is approximately five years. Therefore, DIRECTV expects that this satelite can continue to be used to provide DBS services to is customers, as well as backup capability, on a similar basis beyond the expiration date ofthe current license. Grant othis STA would serve the public iterest, convenience and necessity because the continued operation ofDIRECTV 1 will allow DIRECTV to utilize the remaining life othe satelite and to make use ofthe valuable capscity and remaining operability ofthe space station. peensua
