Speed dictation apparatus for a high-speed elevator motor control system which generates a time-controlled speed dictation signal to control the speed of the car in a predetermined manner so that it is accelerated at the same predetermined rate for any length of trip. A distance-controlled speed dictation signal is also generated. This is operable to control the speed of the car during its deceleration in a predetermined manner as a function of its distance from a selected landing at which it is to stop. The car is decelerated in substantially the same predetermined manner as it would be by the distance-controlled signal notwithstanding the continued generation of the time-controlled signal which would otherwise cause the motor to control the speed of the car in a different manner.
