An electronic monitoring system comprising one or more remotely positioned monitoring units has a plurality of different types of sensors for detecting intrusions into the monitored area. Each type of sensor is sensitive to a different phenomenon, and their combined output signals identify an intruding target; since each target tends to have a distinctive target signature. The sensor signals are transmitted to a monitoring-station, where an operator can determine the action to be taken.
