An apparatus for measuring the output of a photomultiplier tube energized by the output of a rotating analyzer which is in the path of a polarized light beam. The AC component of the output signal is compared to a reference signal whose frequency corresponds to twice the rotation rate of the analyzer and the phase difference between the two signals provides the spatial orientation of the polarized light. The amplitude of the AC component is proportional to the phase retardation of the polarized beam components. The DC component of the photomultiplier output is used to control the gain of the photomultiplier.
