Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
The Boeing Company (Boeing) respectfully requests an extension of its experimental STA (Call Sign WD2XFK; File No. 0424-EX-ST-2006) to operate previously authorized earth station antennas in the maritime mobile context for an additional six (6) months under the same terms and conditions that apply to its prior authority. This application is styled as a new experimental STA request because the OET ELS system would not permit use of the prior application as a template despite multiple efforts earlier today. Boeing has maintained authority to operate up to ten (10) MELCO maritime terminals (Model No. RN211709) for antenna testing and service validation purposes. (See File Nos. 0401-EX-ST-2005 and 0424-EX-ST-2006) These earth station antennas operate at a maximum transmit power (ERP) of 40.7 kW (48.2 dBW e.i.r.p.), which results in an off-axis EIRP that is significantly less than that of a single routinely licensed VSAT antenna. Boeing has previously submitted public interest and technical information supporting grant of its STA request. (See, e.g., File No. 0401-EX-ST-2005 - Attachment) Because the information supporting this request is the same as that supporting the original grant, Boeing hereby incorporates the previously filed information by reference. Boeing expressly accepts all of the conditions included in its existing STA. Finally, Boeing remains in discussions with the U.S. Government regarding the provision of maritime services and recently submitted a response to a Navy request for information regarding such services. Boeings requirement for the requested authority stems from the need to conduct experimentations in support of those discussions and potential resulting service to the U.S. Government.
