Special Temporary Authority application - Purpose of Operation
Please explain the purpose of operation:
The license is required for GAPS testing. GAPS is used in support of commercial airplane community noise testing. In this type of testing the test airplane flies simulated takeoff and approach conditions over a microphone array. These noise tests usually last for few hours per day over a period of one to two weeks. Boeing only conducts this type of testing once every year or so. GAPS provides precise three-dimensional airplane position information during these noise tests. The GAPS VHF radio datalink sends differential GPS corrections data from the GAPS Reference Station to the GAPS Airborne Station. Corrections are sent twice per second during airplane testing.
