Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
The goal of the Solar Impulse is to fly around the world with an aircraft only powered by Solar Energy. The aircraft is followed by a team following the course from the ground. Solar Impulse set up a ground base station on the destination airport. An STA is required to use temporarily our emitting devices in accordance with FCC regulations and declare our spectrum requirements.

Please explain the purpose of operation:
Communications to support around-the-world solar-powered aircraft flight. Solar Impulse have strong communication needs and uses internet devices to stream images & movies on its website. The team uses the usual services such as email and VPN connection to reach our file server. It uses as well Standard Walky talky for aicraft ground operation coordination (aircaft ground handling) and event (director/cameraman orders, crowd management)
