Special Temporary Authority application - Explanation
- Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
- The application is for design verification tests to be performed at Lockheed Martin. The communication systems are all commercial off-the-shelf components and none are experimental. Testing of the system at Lockheed Martin is necessary to insure proper operation during demonstrations at US military facilities. The CCD has direct and immediate applications in active theaters of operation. By enhancing the utilization of the surveillance and support robotic systems, the CCD will improve the performance and safety of military personnel.

- Please explain the purpose of operation:
- The developmental system is for the Centralized Controller Device (CCD) consisting of a vest worn by the operator which integrates multiple patch antennas, power distribution, computation and control/display devices and two transceivers. Operator interface with the system is via hand held controllers. The basic system provides command and control of existing robotic systems: the Multifunction Utility/Logistics and Equipment (MULE) vehicle and the Small Unmanned Ground Vehicle (SUGV). The system also provides command/control/video interfaces to the Urban-Unattended Ground Sensor System (U-UGS) and the Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) via the addition of back mounted pouches containing transceivers and whip antennas. MULE emergency stop capability is added via waist mounted pouch containing a transmitter and whip antenna.
