Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
Gogo LLC seeks an experimental license for a three month term to study the feasibility of using the 14 - 14.5 GHz band for terrestrially based broadband service to airborne aircraft. Gogo is an active participant in the FCC's ongoing rulemaking - GN Docket No. 13-114 - that proposes the shared, non-interfering use of the 14 -14.5 GHz band for an innovative and more capable broadband service for passengers aboard aircraft. Gogo currently provides broadband service to over 2400 commercial aircraft using four MHz of spectrum in the 800 MHz Air-Ground Radiotelephone Service. Gogo's airline partners include, American Airlines, USAir, Delta Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Virgin America, and United Airlines. With the increased popularity of airborne connectivity, Gogo is actively seeking additional spectrum and new technologies to increase the capability of its broadband offering for commercial aviation, and for the increased prospect of utilizing broadband services for future airline operational applications. Gogo is very interested in the FCC's proposal to use 500 MHz in the 14 - 14.5 GHz band for airline connectivity applications. In anticipation of FCC action on the allocation, Gogo would like to run a series of tests to determine how the 14 GHz spectrum can be used on a non-interference basis in an aviation environment.
