Special Temporary Authority application - Explanation

Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
We need to test our custom satellite power, computing, and communications systems in space. This testing is important to ensuring that our future weather satellite missions are successful. These tests can be reasonably accomplished in the short duration of the STA and the simplified STA process is better suited for the needs of our small company.

Nature of Service:
Experimental

Special Temporary Authority application - Initial values - Explanation

Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
We are developing nanosatellites for weather remote sensing using custom power, computing, radio, and weather radar electronics. We need to demonstrate these custom systems in flight. We only need a limited period of operation to perform these in-flight tests and need the simplified process and cost of the STA experimental license.

Special Temporary Authority application - Initial values - Purpose of Operation

Please explain the purpose of operation:
The purpose of this satellite is to test our computing, solar, battery, power management, inertial measurement, thermal measurement, radio, and weather radar (scatterometer) subsystems in flight. UHF frequency will be used to monitor satellite condition through periodic telemetry downlinks and to uplink test commands to the satellite. Ku-band frequency will be used to measure low-resolution (10km x 120km resolution cell) backscatter of radar signals off the surface of the ocean and land. This will be used to demonstrate retrieval of winds over the surface of the ocean using the weather radar system and to compare the radar return to the return of other scatterometers over land.

Special Temporary Authority application - Purpose of Operation

Please explain the purpose of operation:
The purpose of this satellite is to test our computing, solar, battery, power management, inertial measurement, thermal measurement, and radio subsystems in flight. Using the requested frequencies, satellite condition will be periodically transmitted to ground and uplinks will be sent to command the satellite.
