Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
Proxim, Inc. (Proxim) herein requests Special Temporary Authority (STA) under Section 5.61 of the Commissions rules in order to demonstrate and test a new line of equipment in the 3400-3600 MHz band. The operation will consist of up to ten (10) base units at and around Proxims testing facilities around San Jose, CA and its Gilroy, CA. Proxim is seeking new STA in order to demonstrate its WiMax system, which it has been designing and needs to put in active test environments.
Proxim herein seeks STA for up to six (6) months permitting it to establish its testing program for the WiMax devices. This is a critical stage for the development of Proxims new equipment and, based on the success of its initial testing, Proxim will file for permanent experimental authority to continue the program.
Proxim intends to operate its equipment, which consists of temporary-fixed base units, at and around the four areas identified in the succeeding portions of this application in order to demonstrate its functionality and to gain valuable testing information for implementation as Proxim considers its final product. The coordinates identified are centerpoints associated with Proxim labs and affiliated base station locations.
Proxim is seeking STA because the scope and duration of its proposed operations are not subject to the testing provisions set forth under the testing authority in Part 15 of the Commissions rules.
The instant request for STA is supported by good cause. Proxim is developing new wrieless data communications devices, for which it intends to to seek authority to manufacture and distribute under the Commissions equipment certification procedures. Proxim believes that it will benefit from demonstrating and testing the equipment before bringing its device to full-scale production, and intends to use its testing period in order to gain the maximum efficient use of radio spectrum from its devices.
