MariTEL, Inc. (“MariTEL”) is the largest provider of VHF Public Coast (“VPC”) services and
provides both voice and data communications capabilities to the maritime industry. MariTEL
continues to expand its wireless data capabilities and has engaged Harris Corporation (“Harris”)
to conduct joint testing utilizing AIS technology and VPC spectrum at existing VHF antenna
locations in Seminole, FL and Palm Bay, FL. Permission is requested for six months to operate
AIS base station equipment with AIS mobile transponders operating exclusively on VPC
frequencies 157.2 MHz (24A), 157.25 MHz (25A) and 157.375 MHz (87A) in the simplex
mode. MariTEL intends to utilize the R40 AIS base station manufactured by Saab Transponder
Tech AB whose emission mask is identical to the Saab R4 mobile AIS transponder that has
already been type accepted by the FCC. The proposed use is within the geographic area licensed
to MariTEL under call sign WPOJ534 and would not affect any other authorized users of the
frequencies.
