Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
Pursuant to Section 5.61 of the Commission’s rules, Joby Aero, Inc. (“Joby”) hereby requests Special Temporary Authority (“STA”) to operate a new conventional experimental radio service station (flight test telemetry and/or video) for a period of 180 days. See Exhibit A

Purpose of Operation
Please explain the purpose of operation:  Joby develops and manufactures major aircraft components. Joby requests STA in order to test and evaluate the performance characteristics of aircraft radio equipment manufactured by Advanced Microwave Products (Model# VST1) in the 5137 - 5150 MHz band. Aircraft using the equipment will operate during daylight hours, any day of the week. Flight tests typically will be one hour in duration and will utilize the frequencies in the areas specified in the foregoing Form up to a maximum altitude of 15,000 feet above mean sea level. Test equipment will be operated only in one aircraft at a time for each location, though multiple aircraft may operate the equipment on any given day. See Exhibit A
