                                Description of Project

                   Cooperative Research and Development Project
Between Ericsson Inc and U.S. Army

Objective:

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the usage and application of UMTS technology
to current and future military communications projects.

Background:

Ericsson and The Army have been in discussions concerning the capabilities of UMTS
systems and the telecommunications requirements of military programs. Ericsson and
The Army are interested in pursuing a project to further assess the capabilities of UMTS
in the context of these programs. Ericsson has developed and manufactured a
commercial trial UMTS system packaged in self-contained transportable trailers.
Pending results, DOD intends to purchase this system under a Foreign Comparative Test
(“FCT”) program and conduct joint testing with The Army and the Special Operations
Command (SOCOM). Prior to the approval of the FCT program, Ericsson and The Army
are interested in commencing a UMTS study under the terms and conditions of a
Cooperative Research and Development Agreement.

Approach:

Ericsson will deliver a self contained UMTS trial system in the 2.1 GHz frequency
spectrum to The Army’s facility at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. This system includes all
of the necessary nodes for a UMTS network, including Radio Network Controller, Radio
Base Station, MSC/VLR, Media Gateway, HLR/AUC, SGSN, GGSN, O&M node,
Service Network, IP Backbone and a limited number of Terminals. These nodes will be
contained within two twenty-foot containers and a remote RBS container. In addition,
Ericsson will provide Installation and Integration services and Professional Services
including Operations and Maintenance, Customer Support, Training for up to 5
individuals and trial Applications. The Army will provide the site on Fort Monmouth for
the UMTS system, where tests will be conducted and the UMTS system will be evaluated
in accordance with a test plan to be developed by The Army.

Anticipated Results:

Upon completion of the evaluation, The Army will have made an assessment of the
potential for UMTS in DOD Communications programs.
