Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:
DexCom, Inc. (DexCom), in accordance with Section 5.61 of the Commissions rules, herein seeks Special Temporary Authority (STA) for a period of six (6) months to operate up to 500 unique Medical Implant Communications Service (MICS) devices. As intentional radiators, albeit at very small power levels, MICS devices are not permitted to operate under the Commissions rules, even for the purposes of testing and demonstration, absent an equipment authorization. Accordingly, DexCom herein seeks experimental STA to permit it to operate the devices at various home environments in 17 different metropolitan areas in the United States. DexComs request for STA is supported by good cause. DexCom is seeking to initiate use of its medical implant devices in order to gather feedback from medical patients who suffer from diabetes as well as the physicians who treat them. The information garnered from the operation of these devices will permit DexCom to improve performance of the devices, enabling the company to continue to make modifications to its MICS chips before marketing the device. DexCom is performing these experimental operations in anticipation of filing an application seeking authority under the Commissions equipment authorization rules in the near future. To this end, DexCom maintains that this request is in the public interest.

Purpose of Operation
Please explain the purpose of operation:  MICS device study required by FDA. DexCom is a manufacturer of MICS devices and seeks authority to perform up to 500 unique tests of the devices in either short-term or long-term phases in home environments. In either phase of use, the devices -- consisting of a MICS transmitter and small receiver -- are operated on a single frequency within a 5 foot radius around the body and worn against the body. The medical patients who would be the subjects of this experimental period are affiliated with medical facilities throughout the United States. Accordingly, DexCom seeks authority for operation of these devices within the metropolitan areas of the facilities identified in Attachment A, noting that the actual use of the devices will take place in the homes of patients. As the devices operate on extremely low transmitting power, DexCom maintains that there is no potential for interference with other devices in the adjacent spectrum.
