                                     REQUEST FOR STA

1. Introduction

By the instant request (“Application”), DRS Sustainment Systems, Inc. (“DRS SSI”)
requests that the Commission grant a two year experimental license to operate the facilities
specified in the attached application.

2. Purpose and Nature of the Operation

To remove soldiers from harm’s way, unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) are being
leveraged for dangerous missions such as IED detection and neutralization. Since IEDs are a
constantly evolving threat, any solution must have the ability to quickly evolve to stay ahead.
The Adaptive Mission Payload (AMP) developed by DRS SSI is a system that provides an
unparalleled level of field re-configurability and ease of new technology insertion for both
platforms and peripherals through an advanced “plug and play” methodology. Thus, the AMP
allows for the integration of navigation sensors, mission sensors, and mobility platforms to create
an intelligent UGV. The AMP hardware is a synthesis of commercial off the shelf products
including a communications module. This Application is filed to obtain transmitting authority
for the communications module portion of the system.

If approved, this license will allow DRS SSI to conduct experiments and perform onsite
customer demonstrations of DRS SSI’s AMP system. Experiments include reliability analyses,
algorithm evaluations, and endurance tests. As part of the evaluations, DRS-SSI will be
comparing the performance and reliability of the AMP’s communication equipment to COTS
communication modules which operate in the unlicensed ISM frequency bands. In addition, DRS
SSI performs onsite demonstrations to potential military customers. The license would allow
DRS SSI to demonstrate the AMP to their customers as part of those onsite demonstrations.

3. Stop Buzzer

DRS SSI advises that the following will be available by wireless telephone as the “stop
buzzer” if any issues regarding interference arise during testing at each of the three sites:

                      Mike Butchko - (314) 440-9492

For the foregoing reasons, DRS SSI respectfully submits that approval of this Application is in
the public interest, convenience and necessity.
