Temporary Weather Radar for US Open Tennis Tournament
A STA is being requested for operation of a weather radar that will be used in
conjunction with the US Open Tennis Tournament that will be held at the Billie Jean
King National Tennis Center, Flushing, NY. The radar will be located on the rooftop
(approximately 20 meters AGL) of the Red Carpet Inn 980 Wyckoff Avenue Brooklyn,
NY approximately 7.7 km from the event location. A UHF data link with a directional
antenna will relay the radar data back to the tennis center where it will be used to advise
the event staff of any impending weather events that could impact the tournament
schedule or endanger the participants and/or spectators.
The radar will operate on 9,410 MHz with an output power of 25 kW into an antenna
with a gain of 38.5 dB producing an ERP of 177 MW. The pulse duration will be 1.2 μ
seconds with a maximum repetition rate of 1,500 Hz. Access to the roof area will be
restricted and the appropriate RF Radiation Hazard signs will be posted. A survey of
the site indicates that all other buildings within a 1.5 mile radius are below the height of
the radar location; therefore, based on the equipment parameters there is no predicted
unacceptable RF exposure to either workers of the general public.
In the event there is a need for immediate shutdown of the equipment that can be
accomplished by contacting the Command Center at the National Tennis Center. Phone
number: (718) 760-6264. This location is manned 24-hours a day 7-days a week.
