If it is deemed necessary in order to renew this authorization, American Broadcasting
Companies, Inc. hereby seeks any waiver required to continue to operate INMARSAT
terminals within the boundaries of the United States, in the event such INMARSAT
operation is excluded due to the Mobile Satellite Ventures system (formerly American
Mobile Satellite Corporation). American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. owns and
operates two INMARSAT terminals, based overseas and to be operated within the United
States only in the event of an emergency that disrupts normal communications
infrastructure. The terminals would then be used during breaking news stories for
communications and news coverage when no other means of transmission are available.
Due to the rarity of such circumstances it is not logical to acquire separate equipment for
use within the United States when the INMARSAT terminals, which can operate
worldwide, are already in inventory.
